Cléo de 5 à 7 by Agnès Varda
The film script, first published in 1962, plunges us even deeper into the director’s reflections on the passage of time: this is the story of a transformation, “a tale of metamorphoses” as director Audrey Diwan points out in her preface.
Throughout the book, as in the film, we follow the life and journey through New Wave Paris of Cléo, a young singer awaiting the results of her medical diagnosis. Over the course of short chapters, Cléo meets new people who tend to stress her out about her diagnosis but also remind her of the beauty of life. Filmed on June 21st, the movie is also the passage from spring to summer.
Accompanied by images from the film and Agnès Varda’s notes, the scenario gives us a better understanding of the messages she wanted to convey about the passage of time and the artistic direction she wished to give the film.
The book is also illustrated with some snapshots of the movie so that we can more easily see the plot and recognize some iconic scenes.
This is a quick read and the perfect opportunity to revisit an iconic French New Wave film and its director!
